Die Trennung des Unterhauses vom Oberhaus entwickelte sich im 14. Jahrhundert, und seit dem 15. Jahrhundert wirkt das Unterhaus an der Gesetzgebung mit. Die Rechte des Souveräns und des Oberhauses wurden im Laufe der Zeit zugunsten des Unterhauses zurückgedrängt. Seit dem 19. Die zwei Houses of Parliament befinden sich im Palace of Westminster in London. Das House of Commons - Unterhaus wird vom Volk gewählt und stellt die meisten der Minister. Seine Abgeordneten heißen members of parliament oder MPs. Das House of Lords - Oberhaus kann nur bedingt Gesetze verabschieden. Die peers of the realm - Abgeordneten lassen sich in drei Gruppen einteilen: Einige haben aufgrund ihres Amtes, entweder als law lords - Richter oder als Bischöfe der Church of England - anglikanischen Kirche einen Sitz im Oberhaus, andere werden auf Lebenszeit als life peers ernannt und weitere haben ihren Sitz mit ihrem Adelstitel geerbt. Ein Ausschuss von Richtern des House of Lords ist in den meisten Belangen das höchste Gericht im Vereinigten Königreich. -
